Here some examples of the cost of living in Beijing.
You can read below what I spent in yuan (or renmbibi or kuay, as the locals call their local currency) in Beijing, in june 2007

metro 3 (line 1+2 or line 13) 5 for combined ticket line 1 and/or 2 + with light rail (line 13)

Bus : 1 yuan only. May be more for travel in suburbs
Second hand dvd in student flea market: 5
China telecom sim card for mobile, with activation 78 (included 50y traffic)
Taxi: from 16 to 40 for a run
Gym Fashion in BLCU university, all courses (yoga, salsa, ecc) included: 310 for a month
Ticket to Forbidden City 60 + audioguide 40
