Budget - cost of accomodation and living in Cambodia
In Cambodia the official currency is riel, but American Dollar is in matter of fact as used as riel, and even more when it comes to pay accomodation or any tourist service in general.
In Siem Reap e Phnom Penh now you can find some Atm points with international facilities, accepting major international credit cards. And the cash they give you is american dollar and not riel
Official change is 1$=4.000 riel, so 1€ euro is about 5.000 riel
This is my experience with accomodations in Cambodia in April 2007:
Siem Reap
If you’re arriving in Siem Reap by “scam bus” from Thailand, you’ll be taken in some guesthouse who paid commission to the driver. You are not obliged staying there, even if yo will probably arrive in late evening, tired and stressed and not in the mood to tour the city to find another accomodation, if you haven’t booked one before.
The one they took me was not bad and I ended spend there my whole week. Anyway the easiste choiche is probably take it easy the first nigjt and look for your ideal accomadtion the following morning.
d/d guesthouse 5$ a night, single with private bathroom
Not really close to bar-street, the centre of daily and night life in Siem Reap, 3o minutes walking, but only about 5 by moto-taxi, which cost me 10.000 real dduring the day and 15.000 at night
Phnom Penh
In Phnom Penh Backpackers-ghetto is a very nice lake in the north of the city, that unfortunatley has been sold to privates and the rumors is all guesthouse will be destroyed in less than a year, in order to re-qualificate the whole area. If you want to stay in the city I recommend Top Banana guest house, in the embassies area, managed by a acmbodian guy who I forgot the name, who gave me money back when I realised some white shirts I gave to him for my laundry were screwed up.
Guest House Top Banana (near embassies area) 5 $ a night for single, shared bathroom
On the lake I slept in:
Guest House No problem 3$ anight for single room with private bathroom
Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is more priced than Siem Reap e Phnom Penh.
I’ve been in
Monkey Republic 6$ a night for a single, with private bathroom
During my stay there was a general water shortage in the city and also my rom has no availabilty of water for most of the day. A bit annoying.
